Why the Move Matters More Than Anything Else You Pick
When you generate a timelapse from a still, you make three choices: the photo, the hours, and the camera move. The photo decides whether it can work at all. The hours decide how dramatic the light gets. The move decides whether it looks directed or looks like a screensaver.
Most people pick the move by vibe, get a result that is fine, and never find out that a different one would have been obviously better for that specific photo. This is the guide to picking on purpose.

The Three Pairs People Get Wrong
Six of the thirteen are two pairs of near-twins and one pair that sounds like a twin but is not. These are where most bad picks happen.
Truck vs Pan — travel or rotate
This is the big one.
A truck physically slides the whole camera sideways. As it moves, near objects sweep past far objects at different rates, and that difference is what your eye reads as depth. A pan keeps the camera planted and rotates it, the way you turn your head. Nothing changes its relationship to anything else.
So the test is simply: is there anything close to the lens?
- Foreground rock, railing, tree, doorway, parked car → truck. The parallax is the whole point.
- Wide open scene, nothing near, distant horizon → pan. A truck across a scene with no foreground has nothing to slide past and just looks like a drift.
Push in vs Zoom in — move or magnify
A push in moves the camera closer. Perspective shifts naturally, the background stays in proportion, and it feels like walking toward something. A zoom in changes the lens. The frame magnifies, depth flattens, and the background appears to swell along with the subject.
Push in is the more cinematic default by a wide margin. Zoom is not wrong, but it is a specific flavour: compressed, observed, slightly detached. It suits surveillance-feeling shots and long-lens looks. If you are not deliberately after that, push in.
Pedestal vs Tilt — climb or nod
A pedestal raises or lowers the whole camera while it keeps pointing straight ahead, like riding a lift up a building's face. A tilt keeps the camera where it is and angles it, like nodding.
On a tall subject: pedestal up travels up the structure and sells its scale. Tilt up stays at the bottom and looks toward the top, which sells the reveal instead. Both are correct; they are answering different questions.

On Combining Moves
You can stack up to three. You usually should not.
Opposing moves cancel, so the system will not let you pan left and right at once. That guardrail handles the obvious contradictions but not the subtle ones. Three moves at once tend to produce a wandering, slightly seasick result where nothing is legible.
The combination that reliably works is one move that travels plus one that adjusts: a push in with a slight pedestal up, or a truck left with a gentle tilt down. The first does the work; the second shapes it.
If you are unsure, render with one move. It costs 20 credits at 720p, and knowing what a single move does to your specific photo is worth more than guessing at a stack of three.
The Case for Static
Static feels like the option you pick when you cannot decide. It is not.
A real timelapse shot on a tripod does not move, because the tripod is the entire point. Camera movement is often the thing that gives a generated clip away: the sweep is a little too smooth, a little too perfectly eased, in a way no real rig quite manages. Take the movement out and that tell goes with it.
So if your photo is genuinely well composed and the light has somewhere interesting to go, static plus a high hours setting is frequently the most convincing result available. Let the sky do it.
